Austin Skin Cancer Dermatology Treatment
Skin Cancer Basics
Skin cancer is a form of cancer that occurs on the skin of humans. There are various types of skin cancer with varying symptoms, but most skin cancer comes in the forms of red or brown swollen bumps and patches on the skin. Skin cancer is diagnosed more than any other type of skin cancer, but it is also the most treatable kind.
Most skin cancer forms are caused by over exposure to UV rays from the sun or tanning booths. Skin cancer can typically be removed by surgery, and is not contagious. Smoking tobacco has also been noted to cause skin cancer. Prevention methods include abstinence from smoking tobacco and using sunscreen.
Skin Cancer Treatment
Certain skin cancers can be treated in office and others may need to be referred to a specialist (depending on severity and possibly where it is located on the body). For the skin cancers that can be treated in office, the treatment options range from freezing with liquid nitrogen, to ED&C (Electrodessication and Curettage), to excision of the entire skin cancer. All skin cancer excisions are sent out for pathology to verify that the entire skin cancer is removed.
